The publication contains the speeches and reports made at “The Times of Hetman I. Mazepa in the European History: the Myths and Realities” international research and theory conference (November 7-8, 2008), organized by the Department of History of Ukraine, the Institute of Historical Education, the M. Drahomanov National Pedagogical University. The articles, written by researchers, faculty members, postgraduates, students, shed light on the little-investigated topical issues related to the political, socio-economic and cultural activities of hetman I. Mazepa in the context of the European history. It also covers the “Mazepiada” myths and realities in the descendants’ memory. The authors describe the hetman’s role in Ukraine’s state-building process, restore historical justice with regard to assessment of I. Mazepa’s policy
